{"id":1923,"date":"2016-08-18T22:33:31","date_gmt":"2016-08-18T22:33:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.atu.edu\/library\/?p=1923"},"modified":"2016-08-18T23:20:00","modified_gmt":"2016-08-18T23:20:00","slug":"library-facts-for-faculty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.atu.edu\/library\/2016\/08\/18\/library-facts-for-faculty\/","title":{"rendered":"Library Facts for Faculty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome back, faculty!\u00a0 Or, in the case of brand new faculty\u2014welcome to Arkansas Tech!\u00a0 The Ross Pendergraft Library offers many services to support the research, curriculum, and curiosity needs of faculty, on or off-campus.\u00a0 Here\u2019s a list of a few of top-requested services and resources from the faculty to help introduce you to the Library.\u00a0 For an abbreviated summary of our resources, check out our <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/libguides.atu.edu\/c.php?g=37606&amp;p=239288\">Library Resources for Faculty guide<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4>Course Reserves<\/h4>\n<p>Would you like to set aside\u00a0a book, a textbook, or a DVD for your students at\u00a0a Circulation Desk?\u00a0 Faculty can share their own copy or select a library item to put on course reserve for limited-checkout to their students.\u00a0 To get started, fill out the form that best describes your material:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/library.atu.edu\/services\/facinfo\/ReserveRequest.php\">Print materials (Books)<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.atu.edu\/musiclab\/facultyreserverequests.php\">Multimedia (DVDs and CDs)<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Once the items are placed on reserve, they can be searched by course number, professor name, or title using our online catalog, course reserve drop-down.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/atu-primo.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com\/primo_library\/libweb\/action\/search.do?vid=01ARKTECH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1925\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1925\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.atu.edu\/library\/files\/2016\/08\/finditcourse.png?resize=471%2C246\" alt=\"finditcourse\" width=\"471\" height=\"246\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Library Instruction<\/h4>\n<p>If there\u2019s a research paper or project on your course syllabus, and you are already bracing yourself for Wikipedia citations, consider inviting one of our librarians over for a quick tutorial on library resources.<\/p>\n<p>In 50 minutes or less, a librarian can help de-mystify searching, finding, and citing for basic scholarly research.\u00a0 In addition to classroom instruction, we can provide tours, short overviews of library databases, or more focused tutorials on subject-specific projects and papers.\u00a0 If you are teaching a Research Methods class, this service can be particularly valuable.\u00a0 Contact us at <strong><a href=\"mailto:askalibrarian@atu.edu\">askalibrarian@atu.edu<\/a><\/strong> to schedule a session.<\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"http:\/\/libguides.atu.edu\/homepage\">Resource Guides<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>Don\u2019t have time for dedicated instruction on library materials?\u00a0 The librarians are hard at work building online research guides devoted to specific subjects, majors, and even specific courses.\u00a0 Custom guides can be built for use with specific projects, or generic guides tweaked to include added information.\u00a0 These are great places to start\u00a0students down the right path to subject-specific databases, journals, citation help, and more.\u00a0 Browse our <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/libguides.atu.edu\/russellville\/russellville\">current collection<\/a><\/strong> for research guides to share\u00a0in class or send us an <strong><a href=\"mailto:askalibrarian@atu.edu\">email<\/a> <\/strong>with your own suggestions and requests.<\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"http:\/\/libguides.atu.edu\/go.php?c=13660506\">RefWorks<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>If you are producing scholarly research, this tool is invaluable for managing citations, importing references, and creating bibliographies.\u00a0 Most commonly described as \u201csomething I wish I had known about when working on my PhD\u201d, use Refworks to access and organize your citations from anywhere. Find\u00a0embedded links within our databases and online catalog to quickly add references to your lists.\u00a0 Export directly into Microsoft Word your fully-formatted bibliography in whichever citation style you choose.<\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2bBGzcl\" target=\"_blank\">The Chronicle of Higher Education<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>Want to read it?\u00a0 For free? \u00a0The library has a subscription. \u00a0Follow this link:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2bBGzcl\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/bit.ly\/2bBGzcl\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Click on \u201cView Online\u201d to see the link for full-text for current <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/libcatalog.atu.edu\/login?url=http:\/\/chronicle.com\/interactives\/almanac-2016#id=26_201\">articles<\/a><\/strong> and older content back for two years.\u00a0 You can also search the title in our <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/findit.atu.edu\" target=\"_blank\">library catalog<\/a><\/strong> to find the print issues, the electronic archives, and specific articles.<\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"http:\/\/library.atu.edu\/services\/ILL\/\" target=\"_blank\">Interlibrary Loan<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>The library has expanded our collection <a href=\"http:\/\/libguides.atu.edu\/az.php\" target=\"_blank\">tremendously<\/a> in the past few years, but as academic material costs continue to rise, we struggle sometimes to meet all the research needs of faculty.\u00a0 Enter the twin engines of speed and customer service: \u00a0ILLiad and the outstanding department of Interlibrary Loan.<\/p>\n<p>Our Interlibrary Loan services help you obtain full-text articles and books not held in our own collection.\u00a0 The ILLiad software makes requesting materials from our databases a breeze.\u00a0 Look for the ILLiad logo every time you see a citation without full-text access:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/libcatalog.atu.edu:443\/login?url=http:\/\/search.proquest.com\/docview\/1368588622?accountid=8364\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1926\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1926 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.atu.edu\/library\/files\/2016\/08\/illiad.png?resize=274%2C156\" alt=\"illiad\" width=\"274\" height=\"156\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Use our <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/libguides.atu.edu\/go.php?c=3118953\">WorldCat database<\/a><\/strong> for requesting books not held in our collection\u2014you\u2019ll find the ILLiad logo there, too.\u00a0 <strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/atu.illiad.oclc.org\/illiad\/\">Login to ILLiad<\/a><\/strong> directly with your Tech username and password to track requests, view received articles, and more.<\/p>\n<p>Have a problem or a question?\u00a0 Get in touch with our <strong><a href=\"mailto:ILL@atu.edu\">Interlibrary Loan specialist<\/a><\/strong> (a.k.a. your new best friend) who will go to the ends of the earth to find what you need.\u00a0 You can also call or stop by the ILL office in RPL 124 during regular office hours.<\/p>\n<h4>Citation Measurement<\/h4>\n<p>On occasion, we are asked\u00a0for help finding citation metrics to help faculty\u00a0measure the number of articles referencing their work. \u00a0Here are a few tools\u00a0to assist in obtaining these numbers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/libguides.atu.edu\/go.php?c=3118932\" target=\"_blank\">Web of Science<\/a><\/strong>: This is the most authoritative source for citation metrics in the sciences and social sciences. You can find Web of Science in our list of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/libguides.atu.edu\/az.php\" target=\"_blank\">A-Z Databases<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0 \u00a0Search for your article or yourself as an author to view the number of times your work has been cited.\u00a0 Arkansas Tech currently subscribes to the Science Citation Index only, however, so analysis in other disciplines (e.g. arts and humanities) will be limited.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/libcatalog.atu.edu:443\/login?url=http:\/\/search.proquest.com\/docview\/194490736?accountid=8364\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1931\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1931\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.atu.edu\/library\/files\/2016\/08\/webofsci.png?resize=692%2C119\" alt=\"webofsci\" width=\"692\" height=\"119\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/scholar.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">GoogleScholar:<\/a> <\/strong>This a free service offered by Google, and considered the largest collection\u00a0of citation metrics. \u00a0Google&#8217;s web-crawler has captured millions of citations from publisher sites, institutional repositories, and individual author sites.\u00a0 However, it\u00a0is prone to over-inflated metrics at times because it includes so-called \u201cghost citations\u2019 like duplicate foreign language translations and falsely attributed citations.\u00a0 Be careful using these numbers for true indications of research quantity and quality without verifying the sources of the citations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/libcatalog.atu.edu:443\/login?url=http:\/\/search.proquest.com\/docview\/855079499?accountid=8364\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1930\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1930 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.atu.edu\/library\/files\/2016\/08\/googlscholar2.png?resize=624%2C147\" alt=\"googlscholar2\" width=\"624\" height=\"147\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.harzing.com\/resources\/publish-or-perish\" target=\"_blank\">Publish or Perish by Harzing<\/a><\/strong>: This software tool can perform citation analysis using information from Google Scholar and Microsoft Academic (still in early development stages).\u00a0 The software not only provides a citation analysis of individual works, but also of the scholarly output and measure of a single author or an entire journal.\u00a0 It is capable of calculating metrics like H-Index,
