{"id":2422,"date":"2017-08-12T22:22:23","date_gmt":"2017-08-12T22:22:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.atu.edu\/library\/?p=2422"},"modified":"2017-08-17T14:32:21","modified_gmt":"2017-08-17T14:32:21","slug":"solar-eclipse-party","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.atu.edu\/library\/2017\/08\/12\/solar-eclipse-party\/","title":{"rendered":"Solar Eclipse Party"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Ross Pendergraft Library has teamed up with the<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atu.edu\/physci\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Department of Physical Sciences<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>to host a solar eclipse watch party on August 21st, 2017, from 12:30-1:30.\u00a0 Join us at the observatory patio adjacent to McEver for cold drinks, snacks, and free solar eclipse glasses.\u00a0 The Department of Physical Sciences\u00a0is also providing two telescopes with special solar filters for students, faculty, and staff to view the eclipse close-up. \u00a0All are welcome!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wate.com\/2017\/08\/10\/top-10-total-solar-eclipse-snack-ideas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2423 size-full\" title=\"Don't forget eclipse gum\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.atu.edu\/library\/files\/2017\/08\/1tzxz6.jpg?resize=500%2C559\" alt=\"Carl and Rick meme where Rick says, &quot;guess what snacks we're bringing to the solar eclipse party?&quot; and Carl is just saysing, &quot;Not...&quot; and Rick finishes with &quot;Sun chips and Moon Pies, Carl!&quot;. And Carl says, &quot;Stop&quot;\" width=\"500\" height=\"559\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The last total eclipse across the contiguous U.S. has not occurred since 1979, and the whole country is celebrating with viewing parties, parades, and other special events. While Russellville will not be in an area of totality, where the moon completely blocks the sun, we will experience at least <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/eclipse2017.nasa.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/interactive_map\/index.html\">89% of obscuration<\/a><\/strong>, reducing the light of the sun to a sliver.\u00a0 \u00a0The peak is expected to occur at 1:15 P.M.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/eclipse2017.nasa.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/interactive_map\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2424 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.atu.edu\/library\/files\/2017\/08\/graph-of-sun.png?resize=705%2C417\" alt=\"Interactive map of the united states with the information for Russellville's percentage obscuration (89%)\" width=\"705\" height=\"417\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Because we will not experience totality here at Tech, there is no safe time to look directly at the sun without special-purpose solar glasses.\u00a0 Looking directly at the sun even if partially obscured can damage your retinas.\u00a0 Do not look at the sun through a camera, telescope, binoculars or other optical device while using the solar eclipse glasses\u2014the concentrated solar rays will damage the filter and enter your eyes, causing serious injury.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/7apSAxXbmg0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2425 size-full\" title=\"Let George Takei tell it to you straight\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.atu.edu\/library\/files\/2017\/08\/Eclipse-Infographic.jpg?resize=960%2C1024\" alt=\"An infographic on how to view the eclipse safely.
