Therefore, meaningful extension activities must move beyond basic DOK Level 1 work, and focus instead on student-directed inquiry, critical analysis, and authentic problem-solving that not only connects their learning to specific curriculum goals, but also results in tangible outcomes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The overall goal is to offer tiered, high-yield activities that are more complex (not just \u201charder\u201d), and that are definitely not just \u201cmore of the same.\u201d To serve as a starting point, here are some examples of extension DOK Level 3 (and 4) activities that are specifically designed for advanced learners at the high school level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Genius Hour<\/strong> (independent \u201cpassion projects\u201d)<br>This strategy gives students autonomy over a long-term topic that they are passionate about. They select a subject of deep personal interest, then in collaboration with the instructor, conceptualize a structured process for researching the topic and determining an acceptable final product. Examples include \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>writing a focused short story or play that illustrates an enduring truth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>composing an original music score with a specific theme<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>writing code for a functional application<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>designing an instructional unit to teach a key concept to younger students<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>building a robotic model to perform a specific task<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Hack Lab<\/strong> (divergent thinking)<br>This strategy challenges students to reimagine or rethink established factual data or conventional concepts, brainstorming new ideas. Examples include \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>rewriting the ending of a historical event and exploring the aftermath (\u201cWhat if Great Britian had won the Revolutionary War?)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>inventing a new biological system and logical terminology for a Sci-Fi ecosystem (perhaps non-carbon based?)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>comparing and contrasting the roots of unique languages (Hawaiian vs. Klingon?)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>using the International Phonetic Alphabet (or creating a new phonology) to create a new language, including developing a short \u201cdictionary\u201d of common words<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Building Steam<\/strong> (simulations &amp; logic)<br>This strategy challenges students to become deeply engaged in STEAM activities, exploring how creativity and design intersect with technical problem-solving. Simulations that mimic real-world challenges are a key tool in this process. (Also see the &#8220;Science Resources&#8221; section of this Blog.) Examples include \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>exploring PhET and extrapolating useful applications<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>comparing Mendeleev\u2019s Period Table to Enevoldsen\u2019s interactive version in order to theorize practical chemistry applications<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>engaging in the Stock Market game, managing a $100,000 virtual portfolio and analyzing the real-world trends that impact their \u201cinvestment.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>designing and building their own complex logic puzzle for peers to solve.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Community Service<\/strong> (civic responsibility)<br>This strategy encourages students to become more actively involved in their local community, fostering a deeper sense of relationship. With initial guidance from their instructor, they actively analyze demographics, explore public policy, and identify potential problems and\/or social inequities. They then design targeted proposals for creative, sustainable solutions to local challenges. (Note: This requires much deeper involvement than just completing the \u201ccommunity service hours\u201d required by Arkansas ACT 237 of 2023.) Examples include \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>creating or expanding a local volunteer network<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>developing targeted proposals for specific local needs (food banks, community gardens, city park cleanup and beautification, etc.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>crafting a civic education campaign to address a specific local issue (like homelessness).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>connecting with national organizations like AmeriCorps that focus on recruiting involvement in local public service projects, and using that as a springboard for deeper involvement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AUTHOR\u2019S NOTE: In their most effective form, such strategies rely on the individual student doing the bulk of the work, with minimal interaction or extra work needed from the teacher (except briefly at the beginning and end).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><em>*Originally developed for Pottsville High School, Pottsville, AR.<br>\u00a9 2026 Dr. Bill Morelan.
