But unfortunately, this type of implicit bias can negatively impact our interactions with others (from students to staff to parents), potentially creating problems where none should exist!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few years ago, Yassmin Abdel-Magied used a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=18zvlz5CxPE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Ted Talk<\/strong><\/a> to provide a funny, honest (and very surprising) way to challenge unconscious bias. It&#8217;s a great way to get your staff to look beyond initial perceptions, helping them become more thoughtful, and thus better able to serve your constituents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another resource on this same topic comes from the BBC News. Dr Uta Frith (a Professor Emeritus of Cognitive Development) gives <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/science-environment-34910954\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>several examples<\/strong><\/a> of unconscious bias, explores the negative impact they can have, and offers suggestions for overcoming this innate human trait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s important to note that we ALL have unconscious biases.
