Japan Update #2
The Land of the Rising Sun
Hey, here’s a little update for the Japan trip, it’s been a week since coming to Japan and been absolutely surreal. Upon arrival I suddenly felt overwhelmed at being in a country so far from home. Suddenly all preparation that I had with Japanese language flew out the window as I tried to find my way around the airport. I was anxious to get my first glimpse of Japan but was slowed down by the wave of people also trying to get through immigration. Luckily the people at the airport were very kind and helpful taking the time to walk me through their paperwork. I had a mixed set of emotions as I finally was set free into the country ranging from concern to being ecstatic about exploring. On one hand I felt under prepared in my knowledge of the language and methods for traversal, however the idea of the entire country of Japan being free to explore while learning about the culture overshadowed any fear in me. After being picked up by a bus with other study abroad students, we were shown to our dorms where we would be staying. What surprised me the most was students from the previous semester were waiting to greet us at the door and help us find our way around.
At this point classes haven’t started yet, and I’ve been able to go explore surrounding areas of the dorm. I’m getting use to using the language and finding my way around this massive city with the help of friends that I have made here. One thing I must mention in this post is how good the food is. Words do not do Japanese cuisine justice, and there are so many new things that I haven’t had before that I will already miss when coming home. I’ll do my best not to turn these posts into food reviews. Stay tuned for more updates on my Japan trip.
