I can’t believe I am a week and a half away from going back to the US. Honestly, after this past weekend, I am excited to go home. Being sick is not fun when you’re not in your own bed with your comfiest pajamas. I also wish I was being taken care of by someone since I have to take care of myself here. But on the bright side I feel a lot better today after going to the doctor. That experience was definitely something else. Once I got to the doctor’s office, the doctor called me in and asked me for my symptoms then looked in my mouth and that was it. It definitely wasn’t as intense as a visit to the doctor in the US.
Being away from friends and family has been getting harder the longer I stay in Spain. Trying to keep in contact with my best friends has been so hard. I am used to calling them after every little thing that happens to me. At the moment I am very thankful for texts and photos so I can try and keep up. I have also received lots of calls from my family. It makes me miss home and my friends and family more. Especially since I hate being alone.
As my stay lengthens, my understanding of the culture has both deepened and gotten very confusing. For example, I understand why all the stores close at a certain point in the afternoon. It is so people can rest and catch up on things they need to get done at home. Plus, that time helps make up for people staying out late and waking up early. One thing that confuses me is when I got sick people kept asking if it was from the fan in my room or air conditioning. I haven’t had air conditioning for 3 weeks, so I personally have no idea what that has to do with me being sick. Overall, I think it took me about a week to get a good grasp of the host culture.
I feel so much better now so don’t worry! But I’ll get back to you soon!
Adios,
Grace
