Hello all!
It’s strange to think the end of my first semester here is closing in! I’ve really adapted to how my classes here at Komazawa function, which is quite different from how Tech’s classes do. For example, the class sizes can be massive in comparison, with students almost filling all the seats in a classroom that I would say is the combined size of about three Witherspoon classrooms if you’d permit me a teensy bit of hyperbole. Seemingly because of this, the approach to teaching the class can be a lot less individually focused, if that makes sense. I only took two classes out of seven that weren’t strictly advertised as “for abroad students,” and in them most of the daily class time was spent on lectures and presentations. Now, the classes meant to strengthen the language abilities of students, Japanese or English, tended to be smaller and more discussion or group work based. However, because those classes were ones meant to make us exchange students better at living in Japan, I think the former style of class might better represent the typical school life at Komazawa University. Essentially, classes back at Tech felt like they allowed more of a chance for the students and teachers to build a connection of sorts rather than each student being a single face in one massive crowd. It’s a difference that takes a lot of getting used to, especially if you were to take more of those kinds of classes than I did.
Apart from classes, finishing up the first half of my stay has allowed me to further examine my ability to fend for myself and where I need to change my approach. In that vein, I am proud to say I’m making a more serious attempt at food preparation. Microwavable foods and instant ramen are great, but I have missed the imperfect uniqueness of homecooked meals. Oh, and they would be healthier than what I am used to doing, which is also important. So, I have assembled some kitchen equipment and even managed to whip up something as simple as pancakes. It’s a good start, especially since I’m familiar enough with them to be able to tell when I’ve screwed them up. Other than that, a few of the newer friends I’ve made have given me simple recipes for Japanese foods to make, so I’m looking forward to making these and even more dishes as I move into the second semester.
I’m already anxious to find how different I am when coming back home!
