These past few days have been a bit harder than normal. This is because it has been my mom’s and my little sister’s birthday. This was hard because my family tries to spend birthdays or one of the days surrounding it together, and I couldn’t celebrate with them. I was able to call them and talk to them though. It was also funny wishing them happy birthday twice because I wished them hours before when it was their birthday here and again once it was their birthday in Arkansas. Also fueling my fears from roughly a month ago, I was not present when something serious happened. I got a text that a family member had ended up in the hospital due to a fall, nothing extremely serious, but still scary. These things all together did not help with a feeling of missing out back home as much as I was talking with new people in Giessen.
I did do something that was scary as well which was a doctor’s appointment. I needed a prescription, so I made an appointment, and it was slightly nerve wracking. That’s because it was a new experience, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. I did make it through the appointment, go to the pharmacy with my prescription, and pick it up later with minimal hiccups. Everyone was very nice, and I knew I had to have a doctor’s appointment eventually, so I decided to rip the Band-Aid off.
On a much lighter note, I did try a new cake from the bakery near my apartment. It was a cake that had cherries inside and had chocolate on top. In some bites, the cherries were overpowering, but I really liked it. Having the bakery nearby is something that I really like about where I am because I am located outside of the city center. Another thing I like about the neighborhood is that there are a lot of school kids, so it’s not uncommon to hear laughter and playing which is nice.
