It\u2019s been getting hotter here in Germany as Summer is starting to roll in. A little something scary to read for my American viewers, but a lot (if not most) buildings actually don\u2019t have AC! At first I thought it was super weird, but as you ease into the weather patterns of Germany it actually makes sense. More often than not it doesn\u2019t get too warm and if it does, opening a window or two usually helps even out the heat. This is just another one of those little things that seem to differ from another culture simply by simple geographical differences.<\/p>\n
So far, I have traveled all around Germany including cities like Frankfurt, Munich, Giessen, and other small cities as well. It\u2019s so interesting to see the different regional cultures (much like the U.S.!) and as I\u2019ve continued my studies in German, I\u2019ve even seen some accents across southern Germany. My favorite place I have visited so far has to be Belgium though. Belgium for those who don\u2019t know is to the West of Germany. It borders Germany and like Germany many people speak German and\/or English. A tip I have picked up from my travels thus far is if you are wanting to explore Europe, start West and move your way east as you start to get used to European culture. Back to the topic at hand, Belgium was simply astounding. The architecture itself is uniquely referred to as \u201cFlemish Revival\u201d; it sports a noticeable square roof tiling shape with warm red, pink, and dark brown painted houses. Many buildings you see on the outside look like they are straight from the late 19th century but include all the modern amenities on the inside. This is a process known as \u201cfa\u00e7ade retention\u201d and is growing in popularity across historically significant cities that want to keep a modern touch while also respecting the building\u2019s important place in history. For those who are wondering, yes Belgium waffles & chocolate are as good as they say. Now that I know the taste of Dutch chocolate I can never go back to Hershey\u2019s chocolate. It\u2019s just that good. Many people I know who want to visit Europe always talk about big names like the UK, Italy, and France but I implore those of you who wish to see many of the \u201creal\u201d corners of Europe to try and visit smaller countries. Often you will find better prices, friendlier locals, and interesting events.<\/p>\n
