Hello all,
Being in Germany for several months has given me a pretty good idea about life in central Europe, and especially, how different and interesting it can be compared to the US at times. In my first blog I talked about having the goal of learning how to take the trains and buses with no complications. Finally, I’ve been here long enough to accomplish that goal ;). Except one thing about Germany is that you can’t always rely on the trains; for example, I can’t go anywhere this weekend because the train drivers are on strike! But anyways, taking public transport is harder than it looks, so I’m pretty proud of myself. As I also said in my last blog, I took several trains all the way up to denmark last week. That’s the fun part of study abroad, but then the reality hits you and you remember you actually have school work to do (I spent the whole 8 hours studying on the train). I am guilty in terms of forgetting to study because all of the nice things in europe tend to distract me. Also, I plan to take a train or bus to Paris next weekend with one of my friends here. Hopefully the trains will be fully staffed and running by then. But for now, I am going to continue studying all day because my classes are definitely a lot of work. Something that I’ve recently noticed and that has surprised me about Europe is how quickly it gets cold. It was very warm just a month ago, now it gets close to freezing every day. We also don’t have a heating system besides a small heating-grate on the wall, which often doesn’t work because of the gas expenses in Germany, but we make do. Other than that, not much else is going on right now, but I am really excited and hoping for a snowy Christmas break, which is right around the corner 🙂
