An Opposing View

Here’s an interesting article that challenges our nation’s “obsession with test scores.” Alfie Kohn is well-recognized for his critiques of traditional American education. And although this article was written almost 20 years ago, it’s still surprisingly relevant today.

As curriculum leaders, we know that state testing is neither all good nor all bad. Offering this “opposing view” is simply as a way to encourage deeper thought about the topic.

The reality is that the tightrope between high-stakes testing on one side and no accountability at all on the other is a very difficult journey. It’s all too easy to slide toward one extreme or the other.
