Seven Principles of Partnership

Jim Knight has spent more than two decades studying professional learning, effective teaching, and instructional coaching. He’s a nationally-recognized expert on improving the relationship between principals and teachers – a core component of school improvement.

In this article, Knight lists seven key principles of partnership and explains how to put them into practice. It’s a “must read” for educational leaders looking for ways to improve interactions with their faculty.

Responding to Intolerance

This is a tough one!

As effective educational leaders, one of our goals should be to prepare young people to be respectful, thoughtful community members. They must learn how to dialog and disagree without becoming angry, aggressive, or violent.

Unfortunately, the current national political environment, as well as local political and racial divisions, is making that goal much more difficult. This article by Rogers and Kahne explores the challenges involved and offers suggestions on how to prevent or reduce hateful or racist speech and violent actions. It offers several suggestions for building community and supporting a positive agenda.

As violent extremism in our country continues to grow, it’s vital that our schools offer a different perspective and help students understand the importance of respect for opposing views and engaging in productive dialog … key components that this country was built on. America’s future may well depend on how effective we are accomplishing this.

Help Prevent Teacher Burnout

Teachers are normally an incredibly resilient group. Unfortunately, these are not normal times.

recent Gallup survey found that 44% of US teachers now report feeling “always” or “very often” burned out — a much higher percentage than any other profession (including medical professionals). The combination of students’ increased social and emotional needs, extra duties, major staff shortages, and more … plus an increasing lack of respect for educators (primarily driven by talk show hosts and self-serving politicians who thrive on manufactured outrage) … has led to record numbers of teachers leaving the profession.

This article offers some important tips on how you can support your teachers and reduce burnout. It can help you combat negative stereotypes and ensure that your teachers receive recognition for their valuable work!

Unfair Evaluation of Administrators

Evaluating school principals based on their students’ overall performance on standardized tests may be misleading at best. While decades of research shows that principals can positively impact some student outcomes, such as classroom grades and college plans, a new study suggests that a principal’s influence on standardized test scores is significantly less than previously believed.

Bottom line: School boards (and even legislators) need to know that evaluating the performance level of a principal based on the school’s standardized test scores is likely a flawed indicator. Numerous additional methodologies exist that are much more valid.
