School Safety – Grant Assistance

The Greenlights Grant Initiative is a vital resource for overworked administrators in small school districts. Created by actor Matthew McConaughey after the tragic school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, this unique initiative helps small schools access the billions of dollars in federal funding earmarked for school security and child well-being.

According to McConaughey, “The superintendents and principals in many of these schools that are high-risk, they are wearing three or four hats. They’re the superintendent, they’re the P.E. teacher, they’re the bus driver. They don’t have the time or the resources to fill out these grants. It’s intimidating!”

That’s where Greenlights comes in. The initiative is designed to help under-resourced districts navigate the complicated (and often confusing) grant application process, provides grant writers for assistance, and advocates for long-term improvements to federal grant-making.

Zero Tolerance Policies?

Sometimes well-meaning policies end up having unintended consequences, occasionally even doing more harm than good!

“Zero Tolerance” policies were designed to keep schools safe, and they started to become widespread a over a decade ago. This article and the accompanying videos take a deeper look at what’s happened since then, and review the social and legal ramifications.

If your school board is considering a Zero Tolerance policy, this information adds some much-needed perspective on several aspects of such rules that are well worth considering first.

School Safety

It’s a fact: The number of violent incidents in America’s schools has been increasing dramatically.* And as previous events have proven, tragedy can strike any school at any time.

This blog post offers specific recommendations for minimizing the impact of these situations. Access control, visitor and volunteer vetting, staff and student vigilance, and similar measures can go a long way towards protecting your students and staff.

While some “solutions” being proposed by state legislators are highly controversial (like arming all teachers or 24-hour video surveillance by law enforcement), school leaders should never approach this an “all or nothing” decision. There are many emerging options that may prove to be a perfect fit for your school.

Regardless, the key strategies discussed in this post should give you some food for thought.

Principals and Mental Health

More and more, schools are dealing with serious issues like major depression, addiction, mental illness, negative social media, school safety issues, suicide, and much more.

This month, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) launched a campaign to raise awareness about the mental health challenges students face, and to highlight the solutions some principals are implementing in response.

This campaign encourages principals to lobby for more mental health funding, and it emphasizes the need to prioritize equality, student involvement, and student voice as key components of school mental health strategies.

“Whole School Wellness” will be the primary focus of NASSP’s National School Leader Conference that will be held July 12–15, 223 in Denver. For more details, click here.
