Stop Trying to be Happy!

New research shows that focusing too much on whether you feel happy or not can make you feel even less happy! According to researchers, “happiness is not the goal of life, but a by-product of an active, productive life.”

This cutting-edge research (conducted by teams at three major universities) offers three specific suggestions for increasing your level of happiness. With the ongoing challenges school administrators face these days, and the impact that has on their mental health, this short article may provide a much needed breath of fresh air!

Speed Kills?

It seems counter-intuitive, but educational leaders can recharge their career success by slowing down … allowing time for self-reflection, pumping up their curiosity, and letting go of habits that no longer serve them.

Here are four specific ways that you can “tap the brakes to reduce your speed,” and begin reflecting on what you might do differently. Why not take a little time during your Christmas break to consider this? It’s an important reflection in these increasingly busy times, and a great way to start the new year!

Principals and Mental Health

More and more, schools are dealing with serious issues like major depression, addiction, mental illness, negative social media, school safety issues, suicide, and much more.

This month, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) launched a campaign to raise awareness about the mental health challenges students face, and to highlight the solutions some principals are implementing in response.

This campaign encourages principals to lobby for more mental health funding, and it emphasizes the need to prioritize equality, student involvement, and student voice as key components of school mental health strategies.

“Whole School Wellness” will be the primary focus of NASSP’s National School Leader Conference that will be held July 12–15, 223 in Denver. For more details, click here.
